"I'd love to feel a hug": Kristen Dahlgren shares one of the hardest side effects of breast cancer

Posted by Melissa Chefec

NBC’s Kristen Dahlgren explores a treatment that may change the way she “feels” after breast cancer. It has been over a year since Kristen Dahlgren’s breast cancer diagnosis. She is cancer-free and awaiting reconstruction surgery. By Kristen Dahlgren, Oct. 1, 2020 Luckily, a friend introduced me to a doctor in New York City who is doing a procedure that could change the way women feel after a mastectomy. Dr. Constance Chen, MD, a reconstructive plastic surgeon, is one of a handful of surgeons who is reconnecting nerves as part of natural tissue or ‘”flap” reconstruction. She removes fat and tissue from another part of your body to create breasts, but when she does the microsurgery to connect blood supply, she also uses a nerve graft to reattach nerves in the chest. It’s similar to the grafts that have been used since 2007 in arms, legs and hands. Click HERE to read the full story and watch the video.

Patient Resources

In order to make intelligent decisions, it is important for a woman to do her research and educate herself about all of the choices available to her. A library is a collection of information sources made accessible to a community for reference.
