Introduction to Breast Reduction

At our plastic surgery boutique on Park Avenue in NYC, breast reduction surgery is one of our most common aesthetic procedures. Some women feel that their breasts are uncomfortably large. Their large breasts, or “macromastia,” leads to lower and upper back pain, shoulder grooving from their bra straps, headaches, neck aches, arm pain, and even rashes under the breasts, or “intertrigo.” For women who want smaller breasts, the solution is a breast reduction, or “reduction mammoplasty.”

What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction, or “reduction mammaplasty,” is surgery performed to reduce the size of the breasts. According to the American Board of Plastic Surgery, there are nearly 90,000 breast reduction surgeries performed in the United States every year, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable with your breasts, you’re not alone.

Who are the Best Candidates for Breast Reduction?

As one of the leading plastic and reconstructive surgery practices in New York focusing on the breast and body, we’ve had the benefit of treating many patients with various restorative breast surgeries. The best candidates for breast reduction typically include healthy, non-smoking patients at their ideal body weight who feel that their breasts are too big.

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting breast reduction surgery in NYC with Dr. Chen is to schedule a consultation. During your appointment, Dr. Chen will obtain your medical history, listen to your concerns and goals, and conduct a physical examination. After the history and physical examination, a surgical plan can be developed.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction involves removing excess breast tissue and skin and repositioning the breast tissue and nipple-areola complex higher on the chest wall. The patient will have a lollipop scar that consists of a scar around the areola and a vertical scar from the areola to the inframammary fold. Often, a breast reduction will make a woman look like she has lost weight, even if only a small amount of breast tissue has been resected. It may also make her breasts look younger and perkier.

After a breast reduction, drains are sometimes needed if a large amount of tissue has been resected. There are dressings on the incisions, which usually remain in place for at least 48-72 hours. After the dressings are removed, the patient can shower. Many patients can return to work after 2 weeks. Patients should avoid heavy lifting over 5 pounds for 6-8 weeks. The breasts will be swollen initially, but the swelling subsides and the breasts settle over several months.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Is Breast Reduction Surgery Painful?

Breast reduction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. A regional anesthetic is injected into the chest wall to minimize postoperative pain. You will also be prescribed postoperative pain medication to address any discomfort after surgery.

Is Breast Reduction Surgery Permanent?

The breast tissue that is resected during breast reduction surgery is permanently removed. Weight gain, however, can cause breast tissue to regrow. Since the body is a living organism, there can be fluctuations in breast size with changes in body weight.

What are the Risks Associated?

As with all surgeries, breast reduction surgery has certain risks. Some risks include the following:

  • Breast asymmetry
  • Infection
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Scarring
  • Loss of sensation in the nipple area
  • Uncontrolled bleeding or hematoma
  • Fluid collections or seroma
  • Pneumothorax

What are some Related Procedures?

  • Breast Augmentation
  • Breast Lift
  • Fat Grafting
  • Breast Implant Removal
