Ellen's Run 2017

  • Southamptom Hospital

Ellen’s Run, an annual 5k (3.1-mile) race, is an important fundraising vehicle for the Foundation and an innovative, grassroots event, that raises awareness about breast cancer. Held on the East End of Long Island, where breast cancer diagnosis and mortality rates are among the highest in the state, Ellen’s Run draws on the strength of the community and gives back to the community in the form of local projects. Proceeds from Ellen’s Run support the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital. by funding state-of-the-art technology such as digital mammography equipment. Ellen’s Run also supports Ellen’s Well, a program that provides psychosocial support for breast cancer survivors under the leadership of a specially trained certified social worker.

Ellen’s Run is a family event, aimed at both serious runners—women and men alike—and casual runners, as well as walkers and supporters of all ages. It engenders camaraderie and community as participants support or memorialize a loved one. Breast cancer survivors are recognized and applauded for their courage. A special prize is awarded to the first breast cancer survivor to finish the race. Those who have been touched by the disease or the specter of the disease have the chance to take a positive step.

ABSOLUTELY SAFE, Documentary Film Screening with the Director

  • New York University Langone Medical Center

Last year nearly 400,000 women in the United States got breast implants. At a time when more women than ever are making this choice, fewer voices than ever seem to be asking, "Why?" And fewer still are asking, "Are they safe?" ABSOLUTELY SAFE (2009) takes an open-minded, personal approach to the controversy over breast implant safety. Ultimately, ABSOLUTELY SAFE is the story of everyday women who find themselves and their breasts in the tangled and confusing intersection of health, money, science and beauty. At its heart, ABSOLUTELY SAFE is driven by the experience of the filmmaker's own mother. Diagnosed in 1974 with breast tumors, Audrey Ciancutti underwent a double mastectomy with silicone-implant reconstruction surgery. A year later, her implants ruptured and, soon after, her health steadily declined. Like thousands of other women, Audrey believes her debilitating illnesses (joint pain, chronic fatigue, scleroderma) are linked to her breast implants; however, most doctors and researchers deny this link. Among the debate by plastic surgeons, toxicologists, attorneys, implant manufacturers, whistle blowers, government officials and activists, ABSOLUTELY SAFE introduces more everyday women like Audrey who make choices about their breasts in our appearance-driven culture.

1 hour 22 minutes.

Directed by Carol Ciancutti-Leyva.

Cook For Your Life Book Signing

  • Constance M. Chen, MD

Cook For Your Life started in 2007 after founder, Ann Ogden, was in treatment for her second cancer diagnosis, triple negative breast cancer.  Ann took a break from her successful career in fashion to focus on her treatment.  Suddenly immersed in the world of hospitals and cancer treatment, she became aware of how little her chemo buddies knew about healthy food. Ann started giving cooking tips and advice, which eventually led to her first free hands-on cooking class. Cook for Your Life is her cookbook that teaches healthy cooking to people touched by cancer.

Thank you to everyone who had joined us on such a fun filled night with Cook for Your LIFE's Ann Ogden! Many thanks to Cook For Your LIFE's team for giving us the opportunity to host this event for such a wonderful cause. We hope to continue to spread this mission and educate others as well.
